Boundaries, Burnout & Compassion Fatigue: Developing Professional & Personal Resilience

In addition to burnout and compassion fatigue, the field of psychology is now addressing another survival response called “traumatic stress.”  One symptom of traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue is disengaging from work.  Weak personal and professional boundaries can contribute to or exacerbate this problem.  In an industry where very low patient lengths-of-stay have contributed to high acuity at admission and ever-increasing workloads for team members, hospice teams need to remain intentional about ensuring the best balance between boundaries, compassionate care, and self-preservation.  Join this webinar for a look at caring too little, caring too much, and what to do about it.

Highlights

  • Define and differentiate between compassion fatigue, burnout, and traumatic stress
  • The balance between caring too much and caring too little in work and personal/professional boundaries
  • Critical role of personal/professional resilience
  • Methods to increase resilience
  • How everyone can use evidence-based theoretical frameworks, such as mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy, for self-help with burnout, compassion fatigue, and traumatic stress

Take-Away Tool Kit

  • Self-assessment exercise
  • Worksheet to discover the balance between weak, healthy, and rigid boundaries
  • Exercise for using cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness self-help interventions
  • Handout with lecture notes
  • Extensive list of resources about topics in the handout
