Social Worker & Chaplain Series: Psychological & Spiritual Distress: A Call for Immediate & Skillful Intervention (Webinar &149*)

Distress, defined as “extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain,” is a clear sign for the counselors on the team to perform immediate and skillful intervention. The expertise of social workers and chaplains is vital in alleviating distress. Participants will explore methods to assess both psychosocial and spiritual distress levels and will use scenarios to apply skills and interventions to challenging situations. This webinar will also incorporate key concepts from “trauma-informed care” to address trauma-related distress.

  • Define and discuss psychosocial distress as it relates to terminal illness
  • Review two methods used to assess distress and suffering
  • Translate assessment results into acuity ratings (psychosocial and another for spiritual)
  • Define and examine spiritual distress
  • Apply trauma-informed care interventions to case examples

Take-Away Tool Kit

  • Psychosocial distress and suffering assessment
  • Spiritual distress and suffering assessment
  • Psychosocial acuity scale (one for hospice and one for the palliative care setting)
  • Spiritual acuity scale
  • Program evaluation checklist
  • Resources specifically related to the work of social workers and chaplains
