Social Worker & Chaplain Series: Psychological & Spiritual Distress: A Call for Immediate & Skillful Intervention (Webinar &149*)
Distress, defined as “extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain,” is a clear sign for the counselors on the team to perform immediate and skillful intervention. The expertise of social workers and chaplains is vital in alleviating distress. Participants will explore methods to assess both psychosocial and spiritual distress levels and will use scenarios to apply skills and interventions to challenging situations. This webinar will also incorporate key concepts from “trauma-informed care” to address trauma-related distress.

Gary Gardia, LCSW, APHSW-C, President of Gary Gardia, Inc.
Gary Gardia began his hospice career as a volunteer over 35 years ago. Since then he has worked in many capacities leading a variety of teams and departments including volunteers, social workers, bereavement, and education. Gary holds Master’s Degrees in both Education and Social Work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He also holds the new Advanced Palliative Hospice Social Worker Certification (APHSW-C). Gary received the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NHPCO) Heart of Hospice Award for developing innovative programs to meet the needs of caregivers and the bereaved and is also the recipient of the national social work organization, Social Work Hospice and Palliative Network (SWHPN) Award of Excellence in Professional Education. Gary is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences and a consultant for various businesses and health care organizations. He is currently working in private practice palliative care in Ruidoso, NM.
